Kindergarten classes are reading books about pets in our library lessons this term.
We've read stories about people looking for the perfect pet, pets looking for the perfect home and unusual pets. The children are also enthusiastically sharing their own pet stories. To check out some of the books we've been reading to the The Blurb page. Right now our library is gearing up for National Simultaneous Storytime next Wednesday 27 May. Feather boas are being found, sparkles and sequins are being sourced and you may hear the smoky sounds of jazzy numbers echoing through the bookshelves because this year the book we are reading is Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas by Lucinda Gifford!
Whitney and Britney are two gorgeous chooks who live alongside Dora von Dooze. But Dora is perplexed - why do her dear chickens seem to sleep all day long? Dora decides to snoop. She follows the chooks out at night to the local jazz club where she discovers, to her amazement, that they are Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas! National Simultaneous Storytime is organised annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas in primary schools. To join in at home, watch Denise Scott read the book from the Play School Story Time couch at 11am on Wednesday 27 May on ABC Kids. and ABC Kids iview. Alternatively you can watch Emma from the Wiggles read the book online at Storybox Library https://storyboxlibrary.com.au/. Don't forget that you can also enjoy lots of other books on Storybox Library using our school username and password. You can find these on the Oliver Library webpage through the student portal. Another great idea for our blog name came from Macey from 5D who suggested 'The Blurb'. This is now the title for the section in our blog about books we love. Jasper's (5/6L) idea for a name: Biblio Blog ("biblio" means "relating to books") was also fantastic, and we will use this in the blog somewhere too. Estelle, Jasper and Macey all earned prizes for their efforts. Library Lover's DayLibrary Lovers' DayWe started off the year in our library by celebrating Library Lovers' Day on 14 February. Library Lovers' Day is celebrated on 14 February each year in libraries all over Australia. We celebrate love on this day, so why not celebrate the books we love too? This year the theme was "Uncover Something New" and we had a display of new books in the library. Students, teachers and parents thought and wrote about what they love about libraries on a love note, and we have displayed those love notes on our library windows. Don't they look great? Learning About LibrariesIn Term 1, our library lessons across the school focus on helping students find their way around the library so they can find both fiction (stories) and non-fiction (information/ facts) that interest them. It's vital that students have the chance to borrow books that they have chosen for themselves. There is a multitude of research that shows this is the best way for children to become life long readers. The BlurbTilly and the Bookwanderers
The Year 4 and 5 classes have been reading a wonderful new book during our library lessons. Tilly and the Bookwanderers was written by Anna James and is the first in an exciting series about Matilda (Tilly) who lives with her grandparents in their bookshop Page & Co. When strange characters start appearing in the bookshop, Tilly meets a new friend who might be able to help her solve the mystery of her mother's disappearance years ago. Recommended for ages 8+. The second book in the series, Tilly and the Lost Fairytales, is also available from the library. |
