Every year since 1946 the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has held their Book of the Year awards for Australian children's book. These CBCA Book of the Year Awards aim to:
Kindergarten classes - Early Childhood award Library lessons in kindergarten in Term 3 have concentrated on the Early Childhood books, as well as introducing kindergarten students to our Book Week celebrations. The children have thought about which books are their favourites and why. The books we have read are aimed at children who are at pre-reading or early stages of reading. (Ages 0-6 years.) Stage 1 classes - New Illustrator award Students in Years 1 and 2 were introduced to the books short-listed for the New Illustrator award. This Award aims to recognise and encourage new talent in the field of Australian children's book illustration. Books in this category can be for children from ages 0-18 years. We have considered what illustrations we find appealing and how that adds to our understanding of the story. Stage 2 classes - Picture Book awards Library lessons in Years 3 and 4 in Term 3 have concentrated on the books short-listed for the Picture Books award. We have examined the elements of an effective picture book and how the book is purposefully designed so that the text and illustrations combine to tell the story. Books in this category include outstanding books of the Picture Book genre in which the author and illustrator achieve artistic and literary unity or, in wordless picture books, where the story, theme or concept is unified through illustrations. (The category is for books aimed at children from birth to 18 years. We have read the 5 books that are appropriate for a primary school aged audience). Stage 3 classes - Younger Readers award Library classes in Years 5 and 6 have focused on introducing students to the middle to upper primary novels short-listed for the Younger Readers awards. We have examined the cover, blurb and the first chapter to determine the genre of the book as well as it's appeal for this age group. Books in the Younger Readers category include fiction, drama or poetry that is appropriate in style and content for readers from the middle to upper primary years. (Ages 7-12 years.) Book Week celebration day - information books During our celebration of Book Week in Week 6 classes looked at books from the award categories they didn't have time to examine during library lessons. Some of those books included the factual books in the Book of the Year awards aimed at primary school audiences. The Eve Pownall Award category is for books that have the prime intention of documenting factual material with consideration given to imaginative presentation, interpretation and variation of style. (Ages 0-18 years.) The books we studied in library lessons are now available for borrowing from our school library.
