Every year since 1946 the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has held their Book of the Year awards for Australian children's book. These CBCA Book of the Year Awards aim to:
Kindergarten classes - Early Childhood award Library lessons in kindergarten in Term 3 have concentrated on the Early Childhood books, as well as introducing kindergarten students to our Book Week celebrations. The children have thought about which books are their favourites and why. The books we have read are aimed at children who are at pre-reading or early stages of reading. (Ages 0-6 years.) Stage 1 classes - New Illustrator award Students in Years 1 and 2 were introduced to the books short-listed for the New Illustrator award. This Award aims to recognise and encourage new talent in the field of Australian children's book illustration. Books in this category can be for children from ages 0-18 years. We have considered what illustrations we find appealing and how that adds to our understanding of the story. Stage 2 classes - Picture Book awards Library lessons in Years 3 and 4 in Term 3 have concentrated on the books short-listed for the Picture Books award. We have examined the elements of an effective picture book and how the book is purposefully designed so that the text and illustrations combine to tell the story. Books in this category include outstanding books of the Picture Book genre in which the author and illustrator achieve artistic and literary unity or, in wordless picture books, where the story, theme or concept is unified through illustrations. (The category is for books aimed at children from birth to 18 years. We have read the 5 books that are appropriate for a primary school aged audience). Stage 3 classes - Younger Readers award Library classes in Years 5 and 6 have focused on introducing students to the middle to upper primary novels short-listed for the Younger Readers awards. We have examined the cover, blurb and the first chapter to determine the genre of the book as well as it's appeal for this age group. Books in the Younger Readers category include fiction, drama or poetry that is appropriate in style and content for readers from the middle to upper primary years. (Ages 7-12 years.) Book Week celebration day - information books During our celebration of Book Week in Week 6 classes looked at books from the award categories they didn't have time to examine during library lessons. Some of those books included the factual books in the Book of the Year awards aimed at primary school audiences. The Eve Pownall Award category is for books that have the prime intention of documenting factual material with consideration given to imaginative presentation, interpretation and variation of style. (Ages 0-18 years.) The books we studied in library lessons are now available for borrowing from our school library.

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.
Students in Years 3-6 must read 20 books from your stage level or above by Friday 3 September 2021 to complete the PRC. This year the rules have been modified due to the NSW lockdown restrictions. To start adding the books, make sure you click the "log in" button in the top right hand corner, then add your school username and password (HINT: the one you use to login to the school computers). Students in Kindergarten - Year 2 complete the PRC with their class teacher. There is no need for them to add their books to the reading record, because the teachers will do it on their behalf. All students who successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge will receive a certificate signed by the Premier of NSW at the end of the year. Will you complete the Challenge? Meet our friendly library staff. They work hard to make the library an inviting place for all our students. Mrs Robyn Veugen has been our Teacher Librarian for 2 years. She has taught in various school for over 20 years in NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory. After teaching in the classroom for many years she decided to combine her two loves - books and technology - and studied for a Masters of Education to become a Teacher Librarian. Mrs Veugen loves to read and to write stories too. She also enjoys the challenge of finding just the 'right' book to get a child hooked on reading. This year Mrs Veugen is also working as our school's Digital Classroom Officer to help students and staff with digital technology. Mrs Nikki Stanford has been teaching for 3 and a half years, and this is her second with us at Dubbo Public School. Prior to her career as a teacher Mrs Stanford worked as a registered Theatre Nurse. Mrs Stanford works with us two days per week and cares for her two young children on the other days. She is teaching in our Library on Thursdays. Mrs Stanford loves the joy you can find in a book and sharing this with others. Mrs Michele Peak has been working at our school for 20 years and worked at Dubbo South High before that. She been the Library Assistant in our library 1 day a week for 9 years and she also works in the front office. In the library Mrs Peak helps with borrowing and returning books, processing the new books, making displays, putting books back in the right place on the shelf, and assisting the teachers with other library administration. Mrs Peak also helps organise our annual Book Fair and other library events. Our Book Week celebrations will be held on Friday 28 August (Week 6).
Students are encouraged to dress up as a story character or in line with the Book Week theme "Curious Creatures Wild Minds". What sort of wild or curious creature will you come as? We will have a Book Week Parade for each stage to make sure that students and staff can show off their Book Week costumes while still maintaining the new restrictions for social distancing. There will be loads of photos to see here on the blog, in the newsletter and on our new school app after Book Week is finished! Throughout Weeks 6 and 7 we are also holding our annual Book Fair as part of our Book Week celebrations. The Book Fair is a chance for our children to share their love of books and reading with their parents, grandparents and other family members. Our Book Fair is also a great opportunity to contribute directly to our children's education and literacy. You can donate books directly to the school library through the Book Fair. The school also receives 20% + of the sales from the Book Fair as commission, which we use to purchase new books and other resources for our school library. The more you buy, the more our students benefit. This year we have moved our Book Fair online due to the COVID-19 restrictions. So come and join us at our first Virtual Book Fair! You can order books online from our Virtual Book Fair for 2 weeks from Monday 24 August - Friday 4 September (Term 3 Weeks 6 and 7). To find out how to order, go to the "How To" Guides page. Kindergarten classes are reading books about pets in our library lessons this term.
We've read stories about people looking for the perfect pet, pets looking for the perfect home and unusual pets. The children are also enthusiastically sharing their own pet stories. To check out some of the books we've been reading to the The Blurb page. Right now our library is gearing up for National Simultaneous Storytime next Wednesday 27 May. Feather boas are being found, sparkles and sequins are being sourced and you may hear the smoky sounds of jazzy numbers echoing through the bookshelves because this year the book we are reading is Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas by Lucinda Gifford!
Whitney and Britney are two gorgeous chooks who live alongside Dora von Dooze. But Dora is perplexed - why do her dear chickens seem to sleep all day long? Dora decides to snoop. She follows the chooks out at night to the local jazz club where she discovers, to her amazement, that they are Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas! National Simultaneous Storytime is organised annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas in primary schools. To join in at home, watch Denise Scott read the book from the Play School Story Time couch at 11am on Wednesday 27 May on ABC Kids. and ABC Kids iview. Alternatively you can watch Emma from the Wiggles read the book online at Storybox Library https://storyboxlibrary.com.au/. Don't forget that you can also enjoy lots of other books on Storybox Library using our school username and password. You can find these on the Oliver Library webpage through the student portal. This term we are happy to be running the Scholastic Book Club so that you can purchase books and other resources. In the past some students may have brought a catalogue for Book Club home from which to order. However, due to the current COVID-19 situation, the catalogue will look a little different. It will be a virtual catalogue rather than the printed catalogues you’re used to receiving. Even though this is a virtual catalogue, we will still receive 20% of your order value back in Scholastic Rewards to use to purchase additional books and resources for our school. Click on the link to look at the virtual catalogue for the May issue. Then place your order online by going to the LOOP order system and follow the prompts. If you haven’t ordered using the LOOP online ordering system before, you will need to register for it. If you need help with ordering online, check out our step-by-step instructions in the How To Guides here in our library blog. Orders need to be in by 15 May. Late orders will not be accepted. Please note that your order MUST be placed on the LOOP online ordering system. We will NOT be accepting payments at school. Once your order arrives at school, we will contact you to arrange for you to collect it. For further information contact Mrs Veugen in the library. Do you enjoy writing stories?
